Musical Examples from The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures

On this page, you can listen to certain musical examples from The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures, by David Temperley.

NOTE: These files are Midifiles, not sound files. When you click on a link, the notes of that example are downloaded and played using the synthesizer built into your computer. These synthesized sounds are generally not very high quality. Moreover, many of the Midifiles presented here (though not all) are generated from music notation; they are therefore completely "deadpan", played without any expressive timing or dynamics, and usually sound somewhat dull and lifeless. These files are not intended to be satisfying performances of the excerpts in question, but merely to give a sense of what they sound like, as an aid to those reading The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures.
